New Landing Page: Precise Grinding Wheel Dressing Using Wire EDM

Neue Branchenlösung für das präzise Abrichten metallisch gebundener Schleifscheiben.
New industry solution for the precise dressing of metal-bonded grinding wheels.

How can metal-bonded diamond and CBN grinding wheels be dressed precisely, reliably, and cost-effectively? Our new landing page on grinding wheel dressing demonstrates the technological possibilities that wire EDM—also known as EDM or WEDM—offers for this purpose.

In EDM dressing, the electrically conductive metallic bond of the grinding wheel is selectively removed. The abrasive grains remain largely undamaged and are evenly exposed. This creates open grinding wheel topographies, larger chip spaces, and sharp, free-standing grains—important prerequisites for low grinding forces, reduced heat generation, and stable processes.

Hochpräzise Rundteiltische, Rotier- und Indexierspindeln sowie abgestimmte Spannsysteme unterstützen reproduzierbare und prozesssichere Abrichtergebnisse.
High-precision rotary tables, rotating and indexing spindles, as well as optimized clamping systems, support reproducible and reliable dressing results.

Scientifically Proven Benefits
Scientific studies show measurable benefits: Compared to mechanically dressed grinding wheels, EDM dressing can reduce radial wear by up to 80 percent and edge-radius wear by up to 60 percent. At the same time, maximum spindle power decreases by about 40 percent. This results in less heat generation and a significantly lower risk of grinding burn.

Grinding forces also remain consistently low, while profile accuracy is maintained for longer and tool life is significantly extended. This enables longer dressing intervals, reduced downtime, and improved cost-effectiveness of the entire grinding process.

Direct Comparison of Grinding Wheel Topography
SEM images reveal the differences: During mechanical dressing, the bond and diamond grains are subjected to mechanical stress. This can result in grain breakage, low grain protrusion, as well as higher grinding forces and temperatures.

In contrast, EDM dressing selectively removes only the metallic bond. The diamond grains remain largely undamaged and protrude more uniformly from the bond. Greater grain protrusion, open chip spaces, and a more durable bond layer contribute to lower grinding forces, less wear, and more stable grinding processes.
